Thread Works

Backing
You are the best judge of what looks best with the top you have created. Backings may be pieced or whole cloth, but they must be a minimum of six inches larger than your top on all sides. Use good-quality fabric for your back; it will get as much or more wear than the front. We offer 100% cotton muslin (white or unbleached) as a service to our customers; most prefer to choose a coordinating print when they complete their top & send it along at the same time.

Batting
We offer Hobbs 80/20 (80% cotton, 20% polyester), which is the most popular batting for machine quilting. You may also choose from 100% cotton, which gives a more “antique” look to the finished piece. 100% polyester is available, which is a good choice for those with allergies, baby & children’s quilts that will be washed often & when a high loft is preferred. Other batts, such as silk, wool, alpaca or black can be special-ordered.

Thread
Thread is the drawing tool of quilting. It can be any color, thin or thick, dull or shiny. All of these are important to the look of your finished piece. We have a large inventory of professional-quality threads from various manufacturers & are always adding new colors & styles. Metallic, variegated & heavy-weight threads are all popular for adding interest to tops, whether in traditional patterns or as part of a custom-designed thread-painted area. I will be happy to choose thread for you after discussing the look you want to achieve, or you may have a specific style or color in mind. If it is available, it can be part of your quilt!
