Preparing Your Top for Machine Quilting: |
| |
Proper preparation of your quilt top will greatly influence the
finished project. Take the time & you will be rewarded with a unique project you’ll be proud to pass on to future generations! |
| |
- Clip all the loose threads, front and back. Sometimes these threads can snag the quilting, as well as detracting from the overall beauty of the pieced top. On lighter fabrics, loose threads on the back side of the top may show though, looking like varicose veins!
- If you need to seam the backing, use a 1/2” seam & be sure to remove all selvages before measuring or seaming.
- Press the quilt top and backing with seams pressed to one side so that seams lay as flat as possible. Even though you may fold the top later for shipment, this pressing is important.
- Do not baste your quilt! Do not use any pins, safety pins, nylon tacks, sewing or spray-basting - all three layers must be completely separate.
- Backing should be at least 4” larger than the top on all sides. Example: if your top measures 60” x 64”, your backing must be at least 68” x 72”. You may seam or piece it as needed, but piecing on the back cannot be precisely lined up with the top pattern.
- Batting should also be 4” larger on all sides, and should be square with straight edges. If you wish to minimize shrinkage when using a natural fiber batt, you will need to pre-wash it.
- If the quilt has a definite “top” & I’ll be sewing a directional pattern (for instance, ducks that all need to face one way), mark the top securely with a safety pin & be sure & let me know what it’s for.
- Sometimes our best efforts don’t give us the results we hoped for - I’ll do my best to blend tucks, puckers and stretched areas, but be aware that any areas that are not flat or square may cause wrinkles, tucks or “puffy” spots. If you will be adding a border to an existing top, please ask for my instructions to help you avoid “ruffly” borders. The quilt will not lie or hang flat if borders are not properly attached.
